Bereavement Support

At McComas Funeral Homes, our caring does not stop after the funeral of your loved one. McComas Funeral Home continues to provide support resources for you and your family through community bereavement programs.

This list of organizations has been compiled in the hope that it can be a resource to anyone working through the grief process. Additional information, counseling and support may be available to you through your faith community, or the hospital and/or hospice that served you.

Specialized Support Groups

The Department of Veterans Affairs

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers bereavement counseling to parents, spouses, and children of Armed Forces Personnel who died in service to their country. This also includes family members of reservists and the National Guard who died while on active duty. Family members of a veteran who was a client of the Veterans Center are also eligible. There is no cost for these services. The local Vet Center Outstation is Aberdeen Vet Center Outstation 2, 223 W. Bel Air Avenue, Aberdeen, MD 21001 or call 410-272-6771.


Taps (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors)

This is an outreach program provided to survivors of Armed Forces Personnel who have died in service to their country. There are workshops and seminars. A Good Grief Camp for children is a one day program offered regionally and nationally.

Gilchrist Hospice Care 
Gilchrist Hospice is an extension of GBMC. They offer a variety of bereavement services that are open to the community. Call 888-823-8880 or go to

MADD Maryland (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) 
MADD offers trained victim advocates, guidance through the judicial process, civil attorney referrals, insurance advocates, support groups and memorial programs. Click here to get help.

The Compassionate Friends-- Harford County Chapter

A self-help group that offers friendship and support to any parent who has experienced the loss of a child or grandchild. Also open to siblings and other immediate family members. Meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 7:00pm - 8:00pm at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Office Building Room 252/255, 1200 E. Churchville Road, Bel Air, MD 21014. The Compassionate Friends -- GreaterBaltimore Chapter

Stella Maris - Center for Grief and Loss

Stella Maris offers a variety of bereavement services. Go to

The Ed Lally Foundation –Suicide Loss Support Group

The Ed Lally Foundation's Suicide Loss Support Group is open to all who have lost a loved one to suicide. Our group holds monthly in-person meetings in Bel Air, MD during which attendees share honest conversations about their suicide loss and the complicated grief they may be experiencing. We invite you to come as you are, ready to talk or simply listen. In addition to our monthly meetings, our group offers periodic socials and a yearly retreat each November on Suicide Loss Survivors Day.
