William Townley Lemly

July 21, 1921 — January 16, 2010

William Townley Lemly, age 88, of Bel Air, MD, died on January 16, 2010 at his home. Born in Fleetwood, NC, he was the son of the late Harris Henry and Annie Belle Cook Lemly. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served our country during WWII in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, Invasion of Normandy in Southern France, and the Battle of Okinawa. A resident of Harford County since 1946, he worked at APG Edgewood for 38 years where he was a sheet metal mechanic. A member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, he taught Sunday school there and served on several committees, and was also a member of the American Legion and the Harford Carvers Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and carving decoys, and had taught Decoy Carving for 13 years at Harford Community College.

Mr. Lemly is survived by his wife, who he married on December 29, 1943, Virginia Dare Gentry Lemly of Bel Air, MD; son, Barry Lemly and wife, Cherry, of Dublin, MD; daughters, Karen Lemly Compton of Williamsburg, VA and Sharon Lemly Dalton and husband, Patrick, of Delta Junction, AK; brothers, Richard and Tracy Lemly, both of Fleetwood, NC, and Clayton Lemly of West Jefferson, NC; sisters, Edwina Kincaid of Fleetwood, NC, Wilma Williams of Elkton, MD, Ola Belle Edwards and Aliene Young, both of West Jefferson, NC; 12 grandchildren, Keri Compton Hall; Sgt. Michael Compton, USMC, Joshua and Justin Lemly, and Gabriel, Zefforah, Grace, Hannah, Noah, Faith, Micah, and Malachi Dalton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son-in-law, Guy Compton; two sisters, Ruth Greene and Lorene Edwards; and two brothers, Norman and Ithel Lemly.

Pallbearers will be Joshua and Justin Lemly, Jason Hall, John Houck, Clayton and Tracy Lemly.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2106 Churchville Road, Bel Air, MD 21015.
