William Melvin Childers, age 84, of Havre de Grace, Maryland passed away on March 31, 2017 at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Abingdon, Virginia, he was the son of William Calvin and Ida Francis (Blevins) Childers and was the husband, for 60 years, of his dearly loved wife, the late Betty Pauline (Polly) Childers. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served our country during the Korean War and had worked for the U.S. Government as a Quality Specialist. He adored his grandchildren and was a helpful and generous person who had a heart for the less fortunate. He led the church choir and taught adult Sunday school. He wrote two books, "Welcome Home" a history of the church and "Until Then" an autobiography.
Mr. Childers is survived by his children, Rebecca Childers-Hunt of Rising Sun and Marshal Childers of New Park, PA; his sister, Ola Aten of Peoria, Illinois; and grandchildren, Abigail Childers, Allison Childers and Jonas Childers.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons, Steven Anthony Childers and Thomas Melvin Childers; three brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church, 1303 Prospect Mill Road, Bel Air, MD 21015.
