William James Kunkel, age 94, of Abingdon, Maryland passed away on December 13, 2022 at Commonwealth Assisted Living. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of William and Mary (Coale) Bond and husband of 70 years to the late Helen Starr Kunkel. He was a member from 1945-52 of the Merchant Marines, 1953-63 Deputy at Harford County Sheriff’s department, 1963-81 Sheriff of Harford County and 1981-85 was appointed by the Governor as Chairman of the Parole & Probation Commission for the State of Maryland. He was also a graduate of University of Baltimore in 1970 with Juris Doctor and admitted to practice law. William was a life member and endowment member of the NRA and a member of the Boy Scouts.
William is survived by his son, James Kunkel (Robin); daughter, Helen Marie Kunkel; grandchildren, Jamie Bartell (Brian), Katie Kunkel (Anthony Stamerro), Meagan Walsh Torres (Jon), Kenneth Ryan Kunkel Walsh, Nico Kanaras (Cassidy) and Alexis Kanaras; and great grandchildren, Helena Bartell, Lucas Kunkel, Bodie Bartell, Juliana Stamerro and Demitra Kanaras.
Visitation will be held under the caring guidance of the family owned and operated McComas Family Funeral Homes, Bel Air, Maryland on Sunday, December 18, 2022, from 4-7 pm. Services will be held on Monday at the funeral home at 11 am. Interment will take place in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.
