William E. Bankert

William E. Bankert (Bill) of Abingdon, MD passed away on December 15, 2022. He was born on April 29, 1934 and was the son of the late Marie & Ellis Bankert. Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Jean Skillman. As a lifelong resident of Harford County, he was a member of many community organizations including the Abingdon Fire Co. (president 1961), Knights of Columbus & St Francis de Sales Church. He held many positions in the church starting with altar boy and progressing to usher, Eucharistic minister and corporator. Bill worked as a Master Plumber for his father-in-law, Joseph Skillman, for 23 years. After acquiring a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University he changed careers and worked as a Budget Analyst for Maryland Department of Budget & Fiscal Planning and as a part-time faculty member of the Business Department at Harford Community College. He also served for many years on the Board of Directors for Susquehanna Bank. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing golf, model railroading, and was an avid reader of history. He found great joy in being with his family, especially his grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Doris, he is survived by children William E. Bankert, Jr. (Patricia) of Harford County & Philip Bankert (Melody) of Wicomico County, 3 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Cecilia Donnelly.
