William Edward “Bill” Lanchak passed away peacefully on Thursday March 20, 2025 at 87 years of age at his home in Jarrettsville.
Bill was born September 8, 1937 in Baltimore City, MD to the late Michael Lanchak and Adelaide Mary Dunnigan. He was the older brother of Catherine Fackett who preceded him in death. The family lived in Canton where he attended Patterson Park High School ‘55 and was a dual sport athlete playing lacrosse and football. While working at a snowball stand, he caught the eye of his future wife Helen Elizabeth “Beth” Hines. After graduation Bill enlisted in the Navy while Beth attended nursing school. They were wed in 1957 and were happily married for 65 years until Beth passed in December 2022. Bill served his active duty on submarines and then worked as a recruiter in the reserves. When he hung up his uniform, he went to work for Western Electric Company (later AT&T) where he remained for 30 years. Still not ready to totally retire, he worked another 13 years for Metro supermarket.
Initially, Bill and Beth lived in Baltimore City where they started their family. They lived in Carney for several years before settling in Jarrettsville in the summer of 1978. Here they raised Gregory, David and Kathryn (Feilinger). Bill is survived by his three children and seven grandchildren, Nicholas Lanchak, Seth Lanchak, Kyla McGlaughlin, Jared Lanchak, Katy Williams, Sarah and Emily Feilinger. He is also survived by six great grandchildren, Madison, Mason, Colt, Max, Oscar and Annie.
Bill was an avid sportsman. He loved ice hockey, basketball, baseball and football. He was an usher at memorial stadium for years. Bill and Beth followed NASCAR and enjoyed traveling to distant tracks to watch Dale Earnhardt “intimidate” his opponents while winning championships. He was also an integral part of the early parks and rec programs in Dundalk, Parkville and Jarrettsville. If you played basketball, baseball or softball in Harford county in the 80’s you probably had Bill as a coach, umpire or referee (sometimes all three). His comical officiating approach left players smiling and laughing. He was once approached by the Baltimore Blast traveling basketball team to be their official referee. He spent several years in various bowling leagues and enjoyed fishing in any type of water. Bill was also an avid coin collector that never passed up a dropped penny. He loved putting together coin sets to give to his grandchildren when they visited. Bill will always be remembered for his passions and the way he excitedly shared them with his family, friends, and community.
