William “Bill” Davison Pullen, age 88 of Jarrettsville, died peacefully on May 19, 2021 surrounded by his children. Born on August 20, 1932 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Frank H. Pullen and Margaret Wickens Pullen and was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Leubecker. Married at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Madonna in 1958, he was the husband of the late Ruth Ann Spencer Pullen for 55 years.
Bill is survived by three children, all of Jarrettsville. Margie (Sam) Fielder, Jane (Greg) Burgess, and William Davison “Dave” Pullen II and 6 grandchildren, Sarah, Laura, and Samantha Fielder and Becky, Joey, and Hannah Burgess. He is also survived by his sister, June Gladfelter of Hampstead, MD.
Raised in Baltimore, he graduated from Baltimore City College in 1950. He received his BS in Education from Towson State Teachers College in 1954 and completed his Master’s degree at Western Maryland College in 1964. Bill joined the U.S. Army in August of 1954, during the Korean War, and was trained as a clerk typist. He spent 2-1/2 years in Japan as a Finance Clerk, teacher, and Special Service Clerk. He returned to the States in 1957 and was honorably discharged on his birthday.
Bill was always an educator, spending his entire career in Baltimore County teaching social studies and driver’s education. He met his future bride, Ruth Ann Spencer, when she was student teaching at Towson Jr. High School. Their first meeting was in the faculty room, where one party noticed an error on the map the other was mimeographing for distribution to their class. Which individual was correct is up for debate, but the encounter made a lasting impression on both of them and the rest is history. They also formed a dinner club in the mid-sixties with five couples, affectionately known as “The Gang” all of which at least one spouse had taught at the same time at Towson Jr. High School. Their numbers are dwindling, but the friendships have lasted over 55 years. Bill retired after 35 years in 1992. After retiring, Bill and Ruth Ann traveled across the US in their camper making many wonderful memories.
Bill was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church for over 60 years where he was Sunday School Superintendent for over 20 years. He served as a ruling elder, trustee, member of chancel choir and Schooner club.
Bill was a dedicated member of the Jarrettsville Lions Club achieving perfect attendance over 50 years, was a past president, and honored in 2015 as a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was also a member of the Madonna Chapter of AARP where he was president for 2 years and served as chairman for the Community Advisory Board for the Jarrettsville/Norrisville area. By the age of 21, Bill had achieved the rank of Master Mason 3rd degree member of the Howard Lodge #141, 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction, and was a member of the Boumi Temple Shrine for over 60 years. He was proud to be a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
