William Asmussen, age 97, of Edgewood, Maryland passed away on August 31, 2023, at Brightview Assisted Living in Bel Air, Maryland. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, he was the son of John and Anna (Laier) Asmussen and husband of the late Rosine (Groener) Asmussen for 63 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army for 23 yrs. and served his country during WWII, Korean and Vietnam wars and retired as Command Sergeant Major. William also retired from Joppatowne wastewater plant. He was known by most as Bill Asmussen the loving father, grandfather and husband and enjoyed telling stories and telling jokes. He volunteered with his late wife at Perry Point VA medical center activities, volunteered with AARP doing taxes and volunteered at BWI USO.
William enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Bel Air Senior Center, swimming at the YMCA, playing shuffleboard at Havre de Grace VFW, going to Longwood Gardens, going to the casino and going on bus trips with his friend and family, watching the New York Yankees along with listening to his favorite music, “The Glenn Miller Orchestra” and seeing them when they were in town,
William is survived by his daughters, Doris Miller, Nancy Cline, Cathy Sawyers and Carol Bonds; son, William R. Asmussen; 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
William is preceded in death by his brother John Asmussen and daughter Yvonne Baldwin.
Family and friends are invited to attend his Celebration of Life hosted by the family on October 7, 2023 at 12 pm with reception following at Grace United Methodist Church, 110 W. Bel Air Avenue, Aberdeen, MD 21001.
He will be laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery at a later date.
