William (Bill) George Ackerman Jr., age 66, of Edgewood, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on April 12, 2025.
Born in Deep River, Connecticut, he was the beloved son of the late William and Marjorie (Holmes) Ackerman. A proud veteran of the United States Army, William served his country for 12 years as a track vehicle mechanic and motor transport operator. During his service, he was honored with several commendations, including the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle), and Marksman Badge (Grenade).
Following his military service, William continued his dedication to his country as a long-standing and active member of American Legion Post #17 in Edgewood.
He retired in November 2021 after a 35-year career at the Aberdeen Test Center, where he worked as a Combat Vehicle Technician and Track Vehicle Mechanic—a role he took great pride in.
William was the devoted husband to Sun (Young) Ackerman. Together, they shared 44 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, dedication, and compassion.
He will be remembered for his charismatic personality, his unwavering willingness to help others, his deep patriotism, and the immense love he had for his family. Whether cheering on his grandchildren at their games, crabbing on the Bush River, or enjoying time at one of his favorite local watering holes, William lived life fully and joyfully.
In addition to his wife, William is survived by his sons, Christopher Ackerman (Brittney) and William Ackerman III (Ashley); his grandchildren, Christopher Ackerman, Raegan Ackerman, Lincoln Sagliani, Briggs Ackerman, and Yeardley Ackerman; his brother, Daniel Ackerman; and his sister, Wendy Ackerman.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in William’s memory to American Legion Post #17, 415 State Hwy 755, Edgewood, MD 21040.
