VIRGINIA M. GOWAN STREET, age 85, of Bel Air, MD, died on October 8, 2007 at Forest Hill Health and Rehabilitation, Forest Hill, MD. Born in Cattaraugus, NY, she was the daughter of the late Alton William and Anna Langhans Gowan and wife, for 61 years, of the late William Alpheus Street, LTC, US Army. Mrs. Street was in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, at the Coast Guard Manhattan Barracks in Brooklyn, NY and was honorably discharged on June 18, 1946 as a Seaman, First Class. She was present and dancing in Times Square in New York at the end of WWII. She was the Executive Director of the Harford County Chapter of the American Red Cross for 18 years, retiring in 1980. During her tenure she assisted in many disaster relief efforts throughout the United States. She also delivered Meals on Wheels in Harford County. She was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Bel Air, the Women’s Auxiliary of VFW Post 10113, the American Legion Harford Post # 39, and the Woman’s War Memorial in Arlington, VA. Also a member of the WAVES National Chesapeake Unit # 7, she was an avid reader and traveled extensively.
Mrs. Street is survived by one son, William Alton Street of Fallston, MD; two daughters, Sherilyn Lea Keck of Forest Hill, MD and Merrie Ann Yosua of Bel Air, MD; one brother, Robert Gowin of Springfield, VA; six grandchildren, William Alpheus Street Jr. of Bel Air, MD, Catharine Alexandra Street of Fallston, MD, Jennifer Lynn Keck of Forest Hill, MD, Keith Wesley Keck of Forest Hill, MD, Michael Scott Yosua of North Babylon, NY and Marc William Yosua of Baltimore, MD; three great-grandchildren; William Alpheus Street III of Bel Air, MD, Kylie Morgan Street of Bel Air, MD, and Samantha Dixon of Forest Hill, MD. In addition to her her parents and
husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Richard Gowan, and two sisters, Dorothy Smith and Betty Taft.
Pallbearers will be William Alpheus Street Jr., Catharine Alexandra Street, Jennifer Lynn Keck, Keith Wesley Keck, Michael Scott Yosua, and Marc William Yosua.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the American Red Cross Central Maryland Chapter, 4800 Mt. Hope Drive, Baltimore, MD. 21215 or to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, General Building Fund, 1515 Emmorton Rd., Bel Air, MD 21014.
