Virginia Atkins Schafer, age90, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on April 28, 2014 at her home. Born in Ashford, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Watson Atkins and Emma Edna (Totten) Atkins Greer. A 1942 graduate of Sherman High School, she had worked for the Glenn L. Martin Company as a "Rosie-the-Riveter". She retired, after 25 years of service, from the Harford County Circuit Court where she served as a supervisor of the Land Records Department. She was also the first woman in Harford County to perform civil ceremonies in the Courthouse.
In addition to her parents, Ginny was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John W. Schafer and son, Gary R. Schafer. She is survived by her son, Richard D. Schafer and wife, Pat, of Havre de Grace; grandson, Gary R. Schafer II of Atlanta, GA; sister, Nancy Lee Tuttle of Charleston, WV; and niece, Joyce Hildt of Charleston, WV who was her caregiver over the last eight months. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Claire Brook Marholin and Evelyn Marie Atkins; and brothers, Benard Ray Atkins, Austin Leon Atkins and Euart Grant Atkins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Ginny's name to American Legion Post 39, 500 N. Hickory Avenue, Bel Air, MD 21014.
