Viola Hughes the “Golden Lady” of Magnolia, Maryland died of natural causes on October 28, 2021 at her Magnolia Home. She was 102 years old. Born at home in Magnolia, Maryland on September 19, 1919 she was the daughter of John and Edna Gunther and wife of 53 years to the late John L. Hughes who died in 1990. She attended a one room Magnolia School House and later attended Old Post Road High School in Van Bibber, Maryland. On April 3, 1937 she married John L. Hughes, a U. S. Army 6th Field Artillery Soldier stationed at Fort Hoyle, Maryland. She and her husband were members of the Magnolia United Methodist Church where her father, Pastor John Gunther, was the minister. After the church was razed in the 1960’s, she and her husband joined The Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Abingdon, Maryland. She was a Godly lady and an inspiration to many always helping others. She was active in the community and a life member of the Joppa Golden Ladies Association. She and her husband enjoyed camping and traveling to Florida with their travel camper/trailer.
Viola is survived by her son, Johnny Hughes; daughter, Jeanne Tourville; grandchildren, Michael and David Hughes, Bruce, Tim, Tracy, Terri and April Tourville; 12 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
