On January 24, 2023, Tyler Joseph Hummel, age 14, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away from cancer. Tyler was born on October 2, 2008 in Charlottesville, Virginia, and is survived by his parents, Nate and Ann (Hartman) Hummel, his older brother Aaron, older sister Renee, and younger brother Matthew.
Tyler was an eighth-grade student at Southampton Middle School and an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Bel Air. Tyler’s faith was an essential part of his life. He enjoyed attending confirmation class and Sunday school, participating in Youth Group and Vacation Bible School (VBS) activities, helping decorate the church with lights at Christmas time, and hunting for eggs at St. Matthew’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt.
Tyler was a lover of wildlife, and squirrels were his favorite! He was an outdoorsman and was often found building forts with his little brother in the woods behind his house, having nerf gun wars and light saber fights, scavenging the woods for buried treasure, and looking for critters. It was not uncommon for Tyler to find and pick-up frogs, lizards, and insects (but NO bees!). He also loved campfires with his family, fishing at the neighborhood pond with Dad, and getting his hands dirty in the vegetable garden with Mom. Tyler loved all seasons, from playing at the beach and in the sand during the hot summer months, to raking and jumping in the leaves in the Fall, to sledding and building snowmen in the Winter. When not outside, Tyler enjoyed cuddling with Mom, reading books and graphic novels, crafting with cardboard and paper, building LEGOs, and playing games and joking with his siblings. He also loved video games (“Minecraft” and “Clash of Clans”), and enjoyed watching “The Simpsons” cartoon, “Mountain Men” on the History Channel, and the silliest videos he could find on YouTube. Tyler had an incredible sense of humor and was always the first to make his friends and family crack a smile and laugh so hard, it made your stomach hurt. Joy and love followed Tyler wherever he went, and he always wore his heart on his sleeve.
In addition to his parents and siblings, Tyler is survived by Marilee Hartman (his maternal grandmother), Guy and Karen Hummel (his paternal grandparents), and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Tyler was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Hartman.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1200 E. Churchville Road, Bel Air, MD 21014.
