Timothy D. Smith

June 6, 1951 — July 31, 2019

Timothy D. Smith, age 68, of Bel Air, MD passed away peacefully on July 31, 2019 at his home in Bel Air, MD. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Frederick Nelson Smith Jr. and Sherry (Dyer) Smith. Timothy, better known as “Timmy”, was a lifelong resident of Bel Air, having graduated from St. Margaret School and John Carroll School. He grew up on Choice Street with his seven brothers and sisters and spent his childhood entertaining all that he encountered.

He graduated from Loyola College in 1973 and worked for over 50 years in the timber industry. He was a third-generation logger and his early career was spent working for his father, Buzz, and uncle, Bob, at F.N. Smith and Sons Piling and Timber Products. In 1985 he became the owner and operator of the saw mill in Fallston, MD, known as "The Mill". Most of the time, you could find him sawing lumber at the mill or harvesting timber in the woods. He enjoyed his work and all of the people that it brought into his life. He was a founding partner of Wheatfield Transportation, and spent many days driving a truck, avoiding tolls and weigh stations.

Timmy was a lifelong member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and was a head usher for many years. He never missed a Sunday service and could always be found at the back of the church talking to parishioners on their way out. He was a longtime member of the Bel Air Jaycees, founding lifelong member of the Harford County Chamber of Commerce, board member of Maryland Forest Association for over 20 years, Maryland/ Delaware Master Logger, member of Friends of Jerusalem Mill, lifetime member of the Steppingstone Museum.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elise (Johnson) Smith; children, Owen (Laura) Smith, Lindsay (Kevin) Ayres, Timothy “T” (Megan) Smith, Meaghan Smith, Abigail Smith, and Andrew Smith; seventeen grandchildren; two brothers and five sisters.

Timmy was a friend to all that knew him. He always made sure that everyone had what they needed and added a few laughs on the side. He could find the good in any situation and always showed strength in adversity. He was a devoted husband, loving father, dedicated son and faithful friend. He enjoyed practical jokes, playing cards, solving the world’s problems, Tuesday pizza night at Buontempos, clearing impassable roads, visiting with sick friends, and cooking beef at school fundraisers for his children and grandchildren. He would give you his all, and expect nothing in return. His light burned bright and God gave him grace, even through some of life’s most trying times. Timmy’s greatest joy was his family, and he spent his life working hard to take care of those he loved.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 533 E. Jarrettsville Road, Forest Hill, MD 21050.
