THOMAS PRICE BROUMEL, age 65, of Bel Air, died at Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park, Maryland on November 27, 2004. Born in Bel Air, he was the son of the late James Howard Broumel and Sara Stearns Broumel. A graduate of Bel Air High School, he attended the University of Maryland on a football scholarship. He served in the Army stationed in Turkey. He was a former Bel Air Police Department Chief and former Colonel in the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. He was the State Fire Marshal for 18 years where he was regional commander for the office in Harford, Cecil and Kent Counties. He was also bomb squad commander for 15 years. He was regional commander for the Southern Region, Charles, St. Mary and Calvert Counties. He also had supervised the OSHA Program. He was past president of the Maryland Chief of Police Association and a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company. He was a former town commissioner of Bel Air and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Harford County Farm Fair.
Mr. Broumel is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Zilka Broumel; a son, Paul M. Broumel of Bel Air; two daughters, Ellen M. Broumel of Forest Hill, Martha P. Gwinner of Bel Air; three step-children, Elaine M. Merkley of Owings Mills, Robin E. Merkley of Bel Air and Katie B. Merkley of Bel Air; a brother, Charles Broumel of Phoenix, Arizona; and four grandchildren, Sara A. Broumel of Bel Air, Coale D. Gwinner of Forest Hill, Jordan F. Lee of Owings Mills and Kennedy M. Lee of Owings Mills. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James Broumel.
Pallbearers will be Matt J. Gwinner, Paul M. Broumel, Tom W. Gwinner, Paul J. Zilka, Jr., Raymond Geisendaffer, and Al Ward.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, 109 South Hickory Ave., Bel Air, MD. 21014 or St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 1 St. Mary’s Church Road, Abingdon, MD 21009.
