Thelma Ruth Spiers (nee Haught), age 84, of Abingdon, MD, died on June 20, 2009 at Citizens Care Center in Havre de Grace, MD. Born in Terra Alta, WV, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Sylvester and Lulu Victoria Hull Haught and wife of the late Oliver "Jack" Spiers. A resident of Harford County for 10 years, she was a longtime member of Camp Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was very active with church activities. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women's Group and the Moose Lodge #1450 in Aberdeen, MD. She enjoyed crafts, gardening, canning, especially making apple butter, tea parties, and music, especially Gene Autry. A great cook, she was considered the Matriarch of the left-handed club of her family and enjoyed staying in touch with them. She was adventuresome and enjoyed traveling, going as far as Hong Kong. She used to play duckpin bowling and also loved water, swimming, going to the beach and to Cape May and Stone Harbor in New Jersey. She enjoyed sports and had been a big fan of the Baltimore Colts, where she had season tickets. Even though she had been ill for quite awhile, she never lost her zest for life.

Mrs. Spiers is survived by her daughters, Linda Mochinal of Abingdon, MD and Victoria S. Kuhn and her husband, David, of Bedford, NH; grandchildren, Karen M. Shimer and her husband, Marty, Amy E. Kuhn, Matthew D. Kuhn and his wife, Alecia, Daniel J. Spiers II; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Milana Shimer; niece, Edna Roy; and many loved family members and friends.
