Stephen Vito Silva of Belcamp, MD passed peacefully on Friday December 30, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Stephen is the son of Manuel (late) and Pauline Silva of Brockton, MA. Steve was born on June 28, 1962. He grew up in Brockton, MA where, in high school, he met the love of his life Bohuska Vodicka Silva. They married in 1982. Stephen studied civil engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and graduated in 1984.
Stephen and Bohuska moved to Maryland in 1984 as Stephen began a lifelong career with the Maryland Department of Transportation. Stephen worked in the Bridge Design Division at the State Highway Administration for 12 years and then for the Maryland Transit Administration from 1996 – 2015.
Stephen was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer in November 2013. Despite a regimen of difficult cancer treatments, he demonstrated a strong commitment to the civil engineering profession when he continued to work for an additional two years and retired as the Chief Engineer at the Maryland Transit Administration in December 2015.
Stephen will be remembered for his love and dedication to his wife, his children, and the community. Stephen was the Founder and former President of the Belcamp Recreation Youth Baseball Program. He saw a need in the community and was the driving force in starting the program, gradually expanding it to many teams for all age groups. In addition to his leadership in the Baseball Program, Stephen also served on the Board of the Belcamp Recreation Council for almost 20 years and coached other community teams in baseball, basketball, and soccer.
He coached every child in his family and continued to coach many other kids in the community for years after his own children were grown, and absolutely loved being a coach and mentor to everyone. Stephen is known to his children as Dad, but the other name he went by, and loved almost as much, was "Coach."
Stephen's love of baseball extended beyond coaching to following his nephews Eric and Alex in their professional baseball careers. He really enjoyed traveling to various ballparks throughout the country, proudly attending and watching his nephews play ball.
Stephen was also an active member of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Committee Member, Merit Badge Counselor, and Fundraising Chairperson for Boy Scout Troop 234, and helped guide his son Jonathan to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Mr. Silva is survived by his wife, Bohuska Silva; sons Michael Silva of Charlotte, NC, Anthony Silva (Susan) of Forest Hill, MD, and Jonathan Silva of White Marsh, MD; daughter Stephanie (Chris) Wroblewski of Washington DC; and grandchildren Lilly Moody, Gionni Silva, and Sage Wroblewski.
