Stephen Robert Greene

Stephen R. Greene, 70, of Bel Air, MD, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025 from pancreatic cancer.

Stephen earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in historical musicology and went on to teach music history. He most recently taught at Lebanon Valley College in Anneville, PA. He previously held teaching positions at West Virginia University, Phillips University in Kyoto, Japan, and the University of Oklahoma. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he was the director of both the Men’s Glee Club and Women’s Choral Ensemble. He has worked in the public schools teaching music to children of all grade levels and abilities, including in Harford County, MD.

Stephen’s passion was choral conducting and bringing communities together through classical music. After earning his Bachelor's of Music in Education from Westminster Choir College and a Masters in Choral Conducting from Oklahoma University, Stephen founded the Thomas Circle Singers (TCS) (https://link.edgepilot.com/s/14d5ae37/AZgj6tAN_EWPeYIf7vnrEg?u=https://thomascirclesingers.org/)

in 1976 in Washington, DC, “a welcoming and inclusive choral ensemble committed to enriching the musical life of the Washington, D.C. region through engaging and impactful performances, and partnerships with D.C.-based social service organizations”. TCS is still an active non-profit today. Stephen enjoyed keeping up with current events, reading and collecting books, cooking, and attending musical performances.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lyn Greene, his mother Bernice Greene, and his father, Robert Greene. He is survived by his children, Alicia Greene of Astoria, New York; Monica Greene of Washington, DC; and Phil Greene of Seattle, WA.
