Sophia ''Sandy'' Keenan

SOPHIA “SANDY” KEENAN, age 85, of Bel Air, died at her home on May 26, 2005. Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Walter Vladimir and Stella Stefanida Wysocki Szugaj and the wife for 41 years of the late Joseph V. Keenan, Sr. She went to St. Stanislaus Elementary School and graduated from Parkville High School. She worked at the Lord Baltimore Hotel where she met her husband. She worked for Hutzler’s in Towson in the 1950’s and worked at Bendix Electronics and retired in 1970. She was a member of the Spice of Life Dance Club, the Polka Weekenders, the Polish Home Club, and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies in Forest Hill. She had been a member of St. Margaret Parish for 32 years. She volunteered in religious education in the 1980’s and the early 1990’s. She had also volunteered with the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, little league baseball and sewed costumes for dance recitals when her children were young. The great joy of her life was polka dancing. She and her husband traveled all over the country and took many cruises to follow her favorite polka bands. She loved to cook, crochet, sew, garden, and do many craft projects.

Mrs. Keenan is survived by one daughter, Joan L. Keenan of Bel Air; two brothers, Paul Szugaj of Rosedale and David Szugaj of Arbutus; one sister, Cecilia Fellmeth of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Stacey Wagner and Kristen McCabe, both of Colorado; two great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and a wide range of friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Joseph V. Keenan, Jr.; one brother, Joseph J. Szugaj; one sister, Helen P. Keeley; and her grandparents who raised her in the Fells Point area, Antoni and Jozefa Wysocki.
