Sarah W. Powers

Sarah W. Powers of Bel Air died on November 28, 2012 at Lorien Riverside in Belcamp, MD. She was 90. Born in West Hartlepool, England, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Jobling and wife, for 43 years, of the late retired Army Lt. Col. Robert M. Powers who died in 1991. Mrs. Powers served five years, from January 1941 to January 1946, as a WAF clerk/stenographer in the Royal Air Force in World War II, having assignments in England, Scotland and Egypt. While in Egypt, Mrs. Powers made several trips to Palestine and visited many places of biblical interest. She was in Egypt when the war ended and in January 1946 returned home to England for demobilization. A few months later, she was employed by the British Foreign Office as a stenographer with the Allied Control Commission in the British Zone of Germany. In 1947 the U.S. and British Zones merged and Mrs. Powers was transferred to Frankfurt where she met her future husband who was serving with the U.S. Army of Occupation. They were married in Frankfurt in 1948 and spent the next 28 years in the military service making numerous moves both in the United States and Europe. Lt. Col. Powers retired in 1974 and they settled down permanently in Bel Air. Mrs. Powers volunteered at the American Red Cross Blood Donor Center, the Sheriff's Department and Fallston Hospital.

She is survived by two sons, Robert N. Powers and Gary W. Powers of Bel Air, and two daughters, Elizabeth A. Bradburd of Belcamp and Linda K. Burgess of Bel Air. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
