Silas Roscoe Young, age 81, of Catonsville, MD passed away on September 7, 2019 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Born in 1938 in Littleton, NC, he was the son of the late John and Leona (Rudd) Young. In 1939 he moved to Baltimore with his family. He entered Joseph Lockerman Elementary School and in 1948 entered Booker T Washington Jr. High School. In 1952, Baltimore City Schools selected two African American young men from various junior high schools to integrate into the public school system. Silas choose to attend Baltimore Polytechnical Institute and went on to Howard University in Washington DC. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served our country during the Vietnam war during 1961-63 and later was employed by the US Postal Service from 1950-65 in MD and Washington DC. In 1965 he was employed at Western Electric, AT&T and Lucent Technology in Cockeysville MD before retiring in 1992. On holidays he would choose to travel to a different state or country. He visited 40 of 50 states and the countries of Barbados, Germany, Poland, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. He remembered many friends and all of his family members' birthdays by sending a card to them.
Mr. Young is survived by his brother, Robert L. Young of Nottingham; nieces, Rev. Deborah Dorsey and Michelle Smith; goddaughter, Erica Bigger; and many other loving extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, James M. Young and John A. Young, sister, Minerva C. Morris, nephew, Richard Morris Jr. and niece, Karen Morris.
