RUBY C. HIGHTOWER, age 87, of Bel Air, MD, died on April 28, 2006 at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. Born in Clarksville TN, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Fanny Cottell. She married her husband in Elkton, KY in 1935, and his job brought them to Baltimore in 1942. In 1951, she went to work for the old Glenn L. Martin Company, where she worked for the next 15 years building airplanes. She moved to the island of Oahu in Hawaii in 1970, and lived there for the next 12 years. In 1982, she retired and moved to Nashville, TN, where she lived for 9 years. She had been active in local churches in both Hawaii and Tennessee while living in those states. She moved back to Baltimore in 1990 when her great-grandchildren started arriving. Her family said that she loved canning fresh vegetables and sewing. She was previously a Sunday School teacher in Middle River, MD. She was an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She enjoyed trips cruising on the Mississippi River aboard the American Queen and the Mississippi Queen riverboats. She also enjoyed family outings and holidays.
Mrs. Hightower is survived by her husband of 71 years, William C. Hightower of Bel Air, MD; one son, Philip I. Hightower, and his wife, Marilynn, of Middle River, MD; one daughter, Pat Scholz, and her husband, Reinhardt, of Baldwin, MD; one sister, Mary Redfern of Dickson, TN; three grandchildren, Cathy Scholz Amberman of Shrewsbury, PA, Michael D. Scholz of White Hall, MD and Cherie L. Hightower of Houston, TX; 7 great-grandchildren, Timothy Amberman, Nicholas Amberman and Jessica Amberman, all of Shrewsbury, PA, and Christy Scholz, Samantha Scholz, Joshua Scholz and Alyson Scholz, all of White Hall, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Ron Scholz, Tim Amberman, George Hokemyer, Mike Scholz, Phil Hightower, and Ted Amberman.
