It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert Joseph Sanford, age 84, of Edgewater, MD. “Joe” was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a revered Ph.D. professor in Engineering at the University of Maryland. Dr. Sanford departed from us on December 21, 2023, leaving an indelible mark on his family and the world of academia.
As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Dr. Sanford created a loving and supportive home for his family. His legacy of warmth, kindness, and intellectual curiosity will forever be cherished.
A passionate educator, Dr. Sanford dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring. His impact extended far beyond the lecture halls, influencing aspiring engineers with his wisdom and guidance. His commitment to fostering the next generation of professionals was evident in the countless lives he touched. His book, Principles of Fracture Mechanics, stands as a testament to his scholarly achievements and enduring influence. One of his proudest academic achievements was being elected as a Fellow in the Society for Experimental Stress Analysis (SESA).
Beyond family and academia, Dr. Sanford found joy in creating stained glass, illustrating his belief in creativity and analytical thinking. He also taught stained glass at the Anne Arundel Community center.
