On April 20, 2009, Robert Gamble James, 76, of Bel Air, MD. Beloved husband, for 45 years, of Ellen M. Sabo James. Devoted father of Janet C. James and husband Thomas Benzing, Stephen R. James and wife Kathleen Tobin-James, and Christine M. Bruns and husband David Bruns. Loving brother of Isabel Bath, and husband Clifford. Also survived by grandchildren Catherine and Alexander Bruns, Jenna Benzing, and Sarah and Margot James.
Born and raised in Detroit, MI, he was the son of Arthur Edwin and Marian Wilson James. He served in the U.S. Army. He received civil engineering degrees from Wayne State University and the University of Michigan. He started his career as an engineer for the City of Detroit. In 1968 he moved his family to Glen Arm, MD where he was active in the community through St. John's Catholic Church, the Jacksonville Optimist Club, and as a volunteer in the Carroll Manor Recreation Council.
He was a founding partner of Century Engineering, Inc. in Towson. He was a registered professional engineer in many states. As a civil engineer he was integral in the design and construction of many of the region's major civil infrastructure facilities including the Washington, D.C. Metro, the Kent Narrows Bridge and Back River Treatment Plant. He then worked for Gannett Fleming and as a consultant for the City of Baltimore Department of Public Works. He retired in 1999 and enjoyed focusing on his drawing and painting. In 2000 he and his wife moved to Harford County. He continued to be active in his new community by volunteering at the Abingdon Public Library and was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.
