Richard Scott Simak, age 64, of Abingdon, MD, passed away on January 24, 2012 at his home. Born in Excelsior, MN, he was the son of the late Clifford Donald and Agnes Helen Kuchenberg Simak.
Son of renowned science fiction author, Clifford D. Simak, Dick Simak gained an early love of science and made it his career. As a young man, he co-authored a short story with his father. Mr. Simak graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1970 and became a chemical engineer working at the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Grounds for 32 years. The main thrust of his work was in the chemical defense arena and he was internationally respected for his expertise in the detection of chemical warfare agents. He shares several important patents in his field, received a Cold War Victory medal and was a member of the Chemical Manufacturing Engineers. Mr. Simak is also remembered as a mentor to many colleagues working with him at Edgewood.
Mr. Simak is survived by his sister, Ellen Simak of Chattanooga, TN; cousin, Margaret Doering of LaCrosse, Wi; and good friends, Al and Kathy Ciolfi of Abingdon.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
