RICHARD “RICK” M. LYNE, age 52, of Joppa, MD, MD, died on March 24, 2007, at his home. He was the son of Marian “Petie” Brady Lyne and the late Richard Albert Lyne. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1972. He was a detective for the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. He began his career as a deputy sheriff on December 31, 1978, and was assigned to patrol duties from April, 1978 to December 1985. He served in the Robbery and sex crimes unit, the major crimes unit, the property crimes unit, and the Narcotics Task Force. He was part of the Criminal investigation division from 1987 to the present. He was assigned to the Child Advocacy Center, which is part of the Criminal Investigation Division assignment, on June 22, 2002. He was instrumental in developing the Internet Crimes Against Children Program; worked with the Mid-Atlantic Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect; and presented Internet Safety programs to many Harford County organizations. Rick had a passion for helping kids. He often would say that this (the CAC) was the place that he made a difference in someone’s life, the life of a child. He was a detective that many wanted to be like and a friend to many. He instructed on child abuse for the Sheriff’s Office Academy, SARC, Maryland Children’s Alliance, and many other organizations. He was often sought after for his expertise in Internet Crimes and was highly regarded in his profession. Rick was a detective’s detective.
In March, 2007, he received an award from the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Project Safe Childhood Award “In recognition of Your Skill, Ingenuity, Hard Work, and Dedication to the Pursuit of Justice in United States v. Dotson”. He also received in March, 2007, the Knights of Columbus Mason Dixon Council Public Safety Award, and a Unit Citation from the Sheriff’s Office for the performance of the unit during 2006.
He was an avid bass fisherman and enjoyed spending time on his boat. Rick built many relationships with the professional community. If you knew Rick, he was your friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his children, Trevor and Gavin. He helped coach them in sports and volunteered at their school.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Lyne is survived by his wife, Brenda Ann McLaughlin-Lyne of Joppa, MD; two sons, Trevor J. Mazer and Gavin R. Mazer, both of Joppa, MD; and his mother in law and father in law, Patty and Bill McLaughlin, both of Port St. Lucie, FL.
