Richard Jay Happick, age 88, of Bel Air, MD, died on December 2, 2010 at Jacob's Well Assisted Living in Bel Air, MD. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late Jacob Adam and Mildred Everhart Happick and husband of the late Virginia Ruth Happick. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his country during WWII in the European Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After his military service, he graduated from Syracuse University earning a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and continued his service to his country through civil service until his retirement in 1980.
He was a pioneer in smart weapon technology and an expert in field artillery systems. A resident of Harford County for four years, he was a member of the Masons, Shriners and the Sigma Phi Epsilon and Theta Tau fraternities, as well as a lacrosse player. He put his family first above all, and very much enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Sandy Pond / Lake Ontario, NY where his legacy will be carried on.
Mr. Happick is survived by his loving son, John R. Happick and daughter-in-law Beth Happick of Bel Air, MD, cousin Gary Dunton of Hampstead, NC; and grandchildren Jessica Rome and her husband, Brett, of Rockville, MD, Matthew Happick of Aberdeen, MD, Andrew Happick of Rock Hill, SC and Daniel Happick of Bel Air, MD.
