Richard Jacob Brand, age 78, of Sandy Spring, Maryland, passed away on March 2, 2025. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Robert and Dorothea (Enfield) Brand, Jr and the beloved husband of 32 years to Robin Deborah Ziek.
Richard had a lifelong passion for working with his hands and understanding how things worked. He spent 19 years serving as an Historic Preservation Officer with the Maryland State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) before retiring in 2009. Prior to that, he worked in the Ohio SHPO. Historic preservation was a natural fit because of his expertise in American history and hands-on construction experience from work in Baltimore and San Francisco.
Beyond his career, Richard was a man of many talents and interests. He loved history, technology, and animals—especially his dogs. There was nothing he couldn’t fix, from electrical and plumbing work to carpentry, roofing, and fencing. Whether tending to chickens, sheep, or even a couple of goats, he enjoyed tackling every challenge with independence, skill, and a touch of humor.
Richard will be remembered for his sharp mind, resourcefulness, and insatiable curiosity. He loved to tell stories, and he always cracked up at his own jokes. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his daughter, Molly Ziek Brand; son, Daniel Jacob Brand; brother, Donald (Greta) Brand; sister, Susan (John White) Brand; nephew, Bobby Brand, IV; nieces, Rachel Brand and Nicole Rosenzweig; and grand-nephew, Dylan Brand.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Brand, III., and niece, Sally Brand.
The family invites you to Richard’s home on Saturday, March 8, 2025, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, to visit and share stories. 18000 Bentley Rd, Sandy Spring, MD 20860.
