Ray R. Fender, a resident of Abingdon, MD, died at the age of 62 on August 10, 2016 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. He was born in Havre de Grace, MD to Rufus Ray Fender and Margie Karen (Powers) Fender. A veteran, he was the first civilian at Aberdeen Proving Ground to attend the Command and General Staff College. He was an Eagle Scout, a Wood Badge graduate and was an exquisite self-taught carver. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army and served in Korea as Liaison Officer to the ROC Army. He was highly decorated for his service and served with high honors. His awards included Distinguished Service Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Special Forces Qualification Badge, Airborne Wings, and Air Assault Wings.
Survivors include his wife Rebecca Lynne Fender, his daughter Sarah Lynne Fender Greenspun (David) of Aberdeen, his mother, Margie Powers Fender, his sister Martha Romero (Art) of Pinehurst, NC, his brother-in-law Steve Wampler, his mother-in-law Louise Wampler, niece Tammy (Arnold) Edwards, her children Taylor and Marshall and many other loving relatives. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his grandson Jacob Michael Parcell.
In lieu of flowers a contribution can be made to the Fender family to help with medical and funeral expenses.
