Preston N. "Charlie Fields" Smith Jr., age 65, of Edgewood, MD, died on August 19, 2010 at his home. Born in Bel Air, MD, he was the son of Essie Lee Edwards Smith of Bel Air, MD, and the late Preston Nicholas Smith Sr. He retired, after 43 years, from Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he was a Telecommunication Specialist. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Vietnam, and was a member of the American Legion Post #39 in Bel Air. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fixing things, repairing televisions, and had installed many telephones for many people.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Timothy N. Smith of Aberdeen, MD; daughters, Georgette A. Johns of Baltimore, MD and Sharmetta T. Smith of Bel Air, MD; longtime companion of 41 years, Janice L. Demby of Edgewood, MD; brothers, James F. Smith of Chalfont, PA and Standford R. Smith of Aberdeen, MD; sisters, Elizabeth E. Robinson of Newport News, VA, Mary N. Pounds of Bel Air, MD, Catherine Clyde Coleman of Bel Air, MD, Agnes Annabelle Mack of Canton, OH, and Barbara Jean Norris of Bel Air, MD; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson; and longtime friend, Johnny Soto of Bel Air, MD. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his brother, Ralph N. Smith.
