Polly Virginia Shunk
On December 30, 2024; our precious mother, Polly Virginia Shunk (nee Harris), 77, entered into the presence of the Lord and into the waiting arms of her true love, Bill. She died peacefully at her home in Edgewood, MD. With family by her side. Born on Nov. 9, 1947, in Van Bibber, MD to Hayes Harris, Jr. and Mary Ellen (Farley) Harris. She was the beloved wife of the late William (Bill) Shunk with whom she shared 47 years of marriage. The heartbreak of his passing in 2013 remained until her final breath. Left to cherish her memory are her children Hayes (Krissy, Rachel) Shunk, Tony (Paige) Shunk and Diana (Randy) Jennings. Of all the joys in her life none brought more happiness than her grandchildren, Heather (Donald), Mike, Jake, Matt, Lyric, Andrew and her great grandchildren Donald, Demetrius, Eli, and Arya. She will be deeply missed by her siblings, Lanny (Ruth) Harris, Betty Crookshanks, and her lifelong friend Roger Kregar. Her memory will be carried in the hearts of her many nieces and nephews, who she loved as her own, cousins, friends, and her church family at Edgewood Assembly of God where she was a lifetime member. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and brother Hayes “Buster” Harris, III. We are sure her passing lead to a glorious reunion with many loved ones and friends.
Polly showed love in the thousands of cards and notes she sent, photo albums and pillows cross-stitched and created, hundreds of gallons of green beans cooked and the best chocolate cake with peanut butter icing on the planet.
She loved butterflies, Eastern Bluebirds, Angels, crafting, and SNOW! She enjoyed feeding all the feathered and furry friends in her yard. She worked as a classroom helper at Old Post Road school, drove a bus for more than 20 years for Edgewood area schools and retired from Rite Aid Distribution Center. She served in her church over the years as a youth worker, Sunday School Teacher, Bus Driver, Missionette Sponsor and Co-coordinator, Board of Trustee member and Grief Share Facilitator. She was also a Campfire Girls Leader.
She was honored to live in the family homeplace where she hosted many parties, showers, reunions, Easter egg hunts, several weddings and with the help of family the yearly, infamous All Night Cookout.
