Peggy H. Devanney, age 86, of Bel Air, Maryland passed away on April 5, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her family. Born in Bedford, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Cleon (Nance) Hopkins and wife of the late John Devanney, Ph.D.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Hopkins. Peggy is survived by her son, John A. Devanney (Gigi); daughter, Joyce Devanney; sister, Nancy Newberry; brother, Turner Hopkins; her grandchildren, Drew, Danny and Lizzie Devanney; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Peggy was caring and had a generous heart. She retired from Harford County Public Schools where she worked as a school nurse for 28 years. While working in the school system, she kept a closet filled with food and clothing and would frequently (and discreetly) send packages home with students whose families were facing difficult times. After retirement, she returned to Harford County Schools as a volunteer, reading to younger students.
“Boo,” as she was called by her grandchildren, felt incredibly blessed to be able to watch her grandchildren grow up. As they lived next door, she helped them with their homework and helped drive them to and from school and other activities. She loved attending their games, performances events and graduations.
A member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Hickory, Peggy was known for her green thumb and enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, spending time with her friends and family, and being in Ocean City.
In her memory, contributions may be made to SARC-Maryland, in honor of Peggy Devanney. (https://www.sarc-maryland.org/get-involved/donate/).
