Paul Haviland, age 89, of Bel Air, MD passed away on October 11, 2019 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air. Born in Lutherville, MD, he was the son of Michael Henry and Mamie (Parks) Haviland and husband of the late Thelma (Standiford) Haviland. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served our country during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Maryland Golf & Country Club as the Head Golf Professional in 1997 after 36 years of service. Prior to his work at Maryland Golf & Country Club, he worked at Clifton Park and Pine Ridge Public Golf Courses. He worked under Johnny Bass at Pine Ridge. He started playing as a child when his father was golf course superintendent at Baltimore Country Club at Five Farms. At the age of 16 he qualified for the US Junior Amateur in Detroit and won the MD Amateur in 1950. He was a member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA), Mid-Atlantic PGA and was inducted into the MAPGA hall of fame in 2007. He played in the 1962 and 1964 US Open, 1964 and 1966 PGA Championship, and the 1982 US Senior Open. He was predeceased by many of his old playing buddies and Maryland Golf & Country Club founders. He was a mentor to many golf professionals over the years. He enjoyed playing bridge, going to the horse races, and watching his grandchildren in various sports games.
Mr. Haviland is survived by his son, P.J. (Diane) Haviland of Bel Air; daughters, Susan (Mark) Franz of Bel Air, Joann (John) Clendenin of Weaver, AL; grandchildren, Nick & Dylan Franz, Nate & Chris Haviland, Trevor & Gage Clendenin; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters.
