PAUL DAVID SMITH, D.O., MPH, age 53, of Bel Air, MD, died on December 20, 2006 at his home. Born in Van Buren, AR, the youngest of 12 children, he was the son of the late Robert Lee and Bernita Faye Triebsch Smith. Formerly of Fort Smith, AR, he was a Bel Air resident for 12 years. He graduated from Northside High in 1971 and then from University of Arkansas at Little Rock, in 1977, with a Bachelors Degree in Biology. He became a Commissioned Officer through the Reserves in 1979, and started medical school. He earned his Doctorate of Osteopathy from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in June 1983 and his Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in May, 1995. He served his Residency at the Center for Health Promotion Preventive Medicine U. S. Army Enviromental Hygiene Agency from 1995-1996, where he practiced in Occupational and Enviromental Medicine. During his career, he worked at the U.S. Army Health Clinic in Fort Monroe, VA, from 1984-1988; Served in Operation Desert Storm as Field Surgeon 93rd Evac, Saudia Arabia in 1991; Chief of Clinics USAMEDDAC, FLW, MO 1990-1992; Officer In Charge U.S. Army Health Clinic, Rock Island Arsenal; Director of Clinical Preventive Medicine at CHPPM in July 1997; Occupational Medical Officer for the U.S. Army Surgeon General, Occupational Medical Officer, Technical Inspections Division, and U.S. Army Inspector General Agency. His many awards include, the Legion of Merit and the Saudi Kuwait Liberation Medal. He was a member of the American Osteopathic Association 1979-Present, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 1995-Present, American Osteopathic College of Family Physicians 1979- Present, and the American Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons 1979-Present. His Board Certifications included: American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians 1994 and the American Board of Preventive Medicine 1996 Specialty Section: Occupational Medicine. He reached the rank of Colonel. In his younger years, Dr. Smith enjoyed camping, fishing and playing guitar. He belonged to the Mens group at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Bel Air, MD.
Dr. Smith is survived by his wife of 28 years, Elizabeth Grace Dollens Smith of Bel Air, MD; one son, David A. Smith of Bel Air, MD; one daughter, Sara G. Smith of Chambersburg, PA; three sisters, Rita Fitzpatrick of Kibler, AR, Sara Sharum of Mulberry, AR, and Donna Lewis of Van Buren, AR; three brothers, Jim Smith of Ft. Smith, AR, Lynn Smith of Grand Rapids, MI, and Phillip Smith of Casa Grande, AZ.
