Paul D. Hines

PAUL D. HINES, age 77, of Churchville, MD, died on October 13, 2007 at his home. Born in Omaha, NE, he was the son of the late Wallace Woodford and Marjorie Guinevere Kistler Hines. A veteran of the U.S Army, he retired after 20 years where he was a Signal Corps photo officer and instructor. He was employed with the postal service for sixteen years, working from the Bel Air and Churchville locations. Mr. Hines raised bison for 25 years on the 60 acre Cedarvale Farm in Churchville, which had been in his wife’s family since the 1800’s. He taught thousands of school children and adults everything he knew about bison. There were endless streams of buses and vans that brought people to the farm to see and feed the buffalo. He really enjoyed being known at “the Buffalo Man”. Paul and his wife enjoyed hosting many organizations for their annual summer picnics on the farm. Everyone enjoyed croquet, badminton, volleyball, the bison, and pedal boats on the pond.

He was a member of a number of organizations including: Churchville Presbyterian Church for 27 years; past president of Churchville Ruritan Club; he was a Mason and belonged to Mt. Ararat Lodge # 44; Harford Choral Society; Wings Over Washington Kite Club; American Kitefliers Association; Maryland and Pennsylvania Kite Clubs; Liriodendron Foundation; Pack Master and Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America; Maryland Ornithological Society; Military Officers Association of America; past Director of National Bison Association; Eastern Bison Association; and the past vice-president of Harford County Chapter of MADD. He was an instructor for Churchville Parks and Recreation Croquet and started the co-ed volleyball program. He officiated for the annual Liriodendron Croquet Tournaments for several years. He was a sailing instructor at the Havre de Grace Yacht Club, helping and participating in the Thursday night races from Tidewater Marina.

His hobbies included kite-flying, geocaching (a GPS/Internet “treasure hunt”), sailing, singing, traveling, tennis, digital photography, anything to do with the computer, and spending time with anyone who would play croquet with him and his wife Emily on their home croquet court. He loved his country and was very patriotic and was responsible for installing the flags and flagpoles at many different locations in Churchville. He proudly displayed the American Flag whenever and wherever possible. He was also the custodian of flags at Churchville Presbyterian Church. One of his favorite activities was flying his red, white, and blue kites at Fort McHenry. On one of his last outings he flew his big red, white, and blue air foil kite behind his son’s boat while they were out on the bay. After his wife, Emily, was nearly killed by a drunk driver in 1989, he became a tireless volunteer for MADD. He was vice-president and held just about every other office in the Harford County chapter for 10 years. He and Emily spoke at the Farm Fairs, schools, Victim Impact Panels, and to thousands of students, teachers, soldiers, police officers and convicted drunk drivers. The Harford County chapter started the first Designated Driver Program in Maryland. It was also one of the first in the United States. He was a lifetime jokester and storyteller, and would tell everyone (even strangers!) he came in contact with, a quick story or a joke. He adored his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hines is survived by his wife 57 years, Sarah Emily Coale Hines of Churchville, MD; two sons, Donald R. Hines and his wife, Wanda, and David P. Hines and his wife, Laurie, all of Churchville, MD; one daughter, Joanne C. Hines of Havre de Grace, MD; one brother, Ronald R. Hines of Lincoln, NE; five grandchildren, Dana M. Cross of Belcamp, MD, Adam D. Hines of Aberdeen, MD, Amanda L. Hines and Emilie E. Hines, both of Churchville, MD, and Wendi L. Slack of Belcamp, MD; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Gerald L. Hines and Richard M. Hines, and a sister, Shirley Joanne Hines.
