It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 of Major Otto Weber, husband of Betsy Lee Weber, father of Otto jr., Virginia, Ronald, Gerard, Christopher, Mary and David, grandfather to 14 and great-grandfather to four.
Born in northern Bavaria, Germany on April 21, 1939, a few months prior to the onset of the Second World War, he left the country in 1951 to start a new life with his parents and sister in the United States, arriving first in Chicago, moving shortly thereafter to Detroit. He rapidly learned the English language, completed high school, became a naturalized citizen and entered the US Army. On July 4, 1959, he married Betsy Lee – the love of his life – remaining committed to her for more than 62 years. His service in military ordnance included being stationed in South Korea; Germany; Vietnam; Saudi Arabia; and a number of posts in the United States, leading to achievement of the rank of Major. He completed a B.S. at The University of Tampa during his time in the military. Upon retirement from the Army after twenty years of service and settling in Maryland, he built a house for his family in northern Harford County, completed an M.Ed. at Millersville State College and began a second career of twenty years as an Industrial Arts teacher, primarily at Catonsville High School, receiving acknowledgement for his commitment to the field and to his students. After retiring from that career, he spent greater than two decades engaged in fine woodworking, making clocks, bowls and other artwork. Throughout his years living in Maryland, he was a congregant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pylesville, serving in its choir for several years.
He is preceded in death by three sons, Otto jr., Christopher and a stillborn boy.
