Oliver Porter Boyer Jr.

April 4, 1928 — February 15, 2010

Oliver Porter Boyer Jr., age 82, of Bel Air, passed away on February 15, 2010 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Jeannette Quinn (Mathis) Boyer, to whom he had been happily married for 52 years.

Born on April 4, 1928, on Chilberry Farm in Perryman, MD, he was the fourth son of Oliver Porter Boyer Sr. and Louise Nelson Boyer. He often reminisced about growing up on the farm on Bush River with his three brothers, parents, and grandparents during simpler times. He loved the river and was a member of the Bush River Yacht Club for many years. His favorite boat was a wooden, 44 foot, custom-made Morton Johnson with three engines called The White Cap. He looked forward to spending weekends with his wife and children crabbing and exploring the Chesapeake Bay.

After graduating from Aberdeen High School, Oliver attended the University of Maryland and received a degree in Business. Immediately after graduation, he joined the army. While training at Fort Jackson, SC, he was recruited by the Counter Intelligence Corp (CIC) and received specialized training at Fort Holabird, MD. Oliver was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War. He began his career as a savings and loan examiner for the FSLIC subsequent to his discharge from the army. In 1966, Oliver joined Jarrettsville Federal Savings and Loan where he was the Director and Executive Vice President for 40 years.

Oliver was dedicated to the Jarrettsville community. He was a member of the Jarrettsville Lions Club for more than 40 years and was the secretary for almost that long. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Lion Honor. In addition, Oliver provided support for troubled boys in his role as a director at FACETS. A yearly scholarship for a business student from North Harford High School was established in his name in recognition of his many contributions to the community.

Oliver was a loving husband to his wife, Jean, and dedicated father to Lynda Manning and her husband, Daniel, of Fawn Grove, PA, Carol Stiebel and her husband, David, of Troy, MI, Patrick Boyer and his wife, Alyssa, of Baltimore, MD, and Susanna Gross and her husband, Benjamin, of Marblehead, MA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Patrick, Catherine, Hannah, Sarah, Jadyn, Isaac, and Finn. He was well loved and devoted to his family and will be greatly missed. Oliver was predeceased by his brothers, William H. Boyer, Oliver Nelson Boyer (died as a young boy), and Henry H. Boyer.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made in Oliver's name to Christ Our King Presbyterian Church, 10 Lexington Road, Bel Air, MD 21014.
