OLIE LEE POPE, SR, age 80, of Abingdon died at his home aftr a long illness on September 22, 2004. Born in Courtland, Virginia, he was the son of the late James R. and Lucy Cutler Pope. He had retired from the federal government at Aberdeen Proving Ground Edgewood Area after 37 years of service as an animal caretaker. He was a member of NFFE Local 178 and the NAACP. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II.
Mr. Pope is survived by his wife, Geneva Elizabeth Spriggs Pope; one son, Olie Lee Pope, Jr. of Austin, Texas; seven daughters, Genevieve E. Massey of Baltimore; Wanda L. Waldon and her husband Wayne of Essex; Tessa B. Dorsey and her husband Dennis of Bel Air; J. Annette Taylor and her husband David of Sparks, Nevada; Doreene B. Watters and her husband George of Edgewood; Phyllis P. Pope of Laurel; Sonya Y. Harris and her husband Robert of Monkton; three brothers, Rufus Pope of Portsmouth, Virginia; Johnnie Pope of Franklin, Virginia; Alphonso Pope of Franklin, Virginia; one sister, Mary Green of Franklin, Virginia; a son-in-law, Phillip R. Sconion of Aberdeen; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one daughter, Geneva R. Sconion and two brothers, Raymond and Jimmie Pope.
