Dr. Olga Baghdassarian Gatewood was raised in a family with four sisters, all of whom were highly educated and became professionals, a lawyer, a mathematician, and a pediatric endocrinologist. Dr. Gatewood graduated college at age 17 and received her Medical Degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon at age 22. She spent two years of residency training in Radiology at the American University Hospital and then, along with her family, emigrated to the United States in 1956. She completed her residency training at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston and became Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine. She later obtained pediatric radiology training at Boston Children's Hospital and was later appointed Instructor in Radiology at Johns Hopkins and Director of the Section of Pediatric Radiology. She was promoted to Assistant Professor of Radiology in 1962, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 1964, Associate Professor of Radiology in 1966, and Associate Professor of Urology in 1987.
Dr. Gatewood met her husband William B. Gatewood when he was a resident in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. They married in 1965 and in 1966 Dr. Gatewood resigned from her position at Johns Hopkins and accepted a position as Staff Radiologist at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace where her husband was Chief of the Department of Radiology. The commuting distance from Harford County where they lived was a compelling reason for this change. However, in 1976, Dr. Gatewood returned to Johns Hopkins and was reappointed Associate Professor of Radiology. This career move, however, was interrupted by her husband's sudden death in October 1977 when she returned to Harford Memorial Hospital to serve as Chief of Radiology, continuing at Hopkins with a part-time appointment from 1977 to 1979. In July 1979, she rejoined the Hopkins faculty on a full-time basis and was appointed Head of the Uroradiology Section. In 1983, Dr. Gatewood was appointed Director of the Division of General Radiology until she voluntarily stepped down in 1986. During her long career at Johns Hopkins, she also held a leadership position in Mammography. She was a well-published academic, and was awarded Fellowship of the American College of Radiology in 1983.
Dr. Gatewood is survived by her sisters, Alice Granoff of Basalt, CO and Vartenik "Rose" M. Baghdassarian of Bel Air, MD; and six nephews.
