Norman Keith Shupe, age 85, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Born in Welch, West Virginia, on August 1, 1939, Norman was the beloved son of the late Thomas Howard Shupe and Doris Louise (Dooley) Shupe.
Norman earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1962 from Drexel Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1964 from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences in 1970 from Princeton University. His professional career was marked by a deep dedication to innovation and service.
From 1962 to 1964, Norman worked as a staff member of the Reentry System Department at General Electric, contributing to the development of a maneuverable reentry vehicle for the Department of Defense (DOD). Following this, he served as an officer in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. From 1970 to 1993, Norman was the director of the Tactical Systems Division at the Army Avionics Laboratory at Fort Monmouth, where he led the development of advanced aviation cockpit display systems. His expertise also led him to serve as a technical advisor to the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), supporting elite military units across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
After retiring from government service in 1993, Norman founded Oriole Associates, Inc., where he continued his passion for aerospace technology by consulting for various DOD contractors, focusing on the development of airborne systems for search and rescue operations.
Norman lived his life with passion and enthusiasm. A devoted Baltimore Orioles fan, he faithfully supported his team through both triumphs and challenges. He was also an avid skier and a skilled Bridge player, pursuits that brought him great joy and camaraderie.
Above all, Norman cherished his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Karen Opet; his devoted son, Thomas Howard Shupe II, and daughter-in-law, Jil Simon; and his treasured grandchildren, Stephen Opet, William Opet, and Eleanor Simon-Shupe. He also leaves behind his brother, Randy Shupe, and sister, Carol Grigonis. Norman was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Daral Willeford.
Norman will be fondly remembered for his sharp intellect, quick wit, and unwavering love for his family. His warmth, humor, and originality left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire and endure in the hearts of his loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (https://t2t.org) in honor of Norman’s life and commitment to service.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love and gratitude.
