Ned Alvard Smith

December 15, 1925 — June 16, 2005

NED ALVARD SMITH, age 79, of Edgewood, died in Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center on June 16, 2005. Born in Orland, Indiana, he was the son of the late Ned Alvard Smith, Sr. and Ruth Myrtle McMullen Fair. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1945-1952 and then he went into the Reserves retiring in 1980 as a Master Sergeant. During his reserve time he was an Ordinance Expect where he taught handling procedures. He worked from 1952-1981 in the Topographic Command Center in Washington, D.C. He was a life member of the V.F.W. 5838 in Joppatowne where he was past Commander from 1970-71 as well as holding other positions throughout his membership there. He was active in their honor guard. He and his wife enjoyed many wonderful years roaming the states in their GMC motor home and belonged to a club called the “Tidewater Crabs”. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and a past member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He enjoyed bowling with his league in Perry Hall from 1981-2003 and enjoyed playing Pinochle with friends.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 56 years, Roberta Elizabeth Kelly Smith; one daughter, Jacqueline Smith of Edgewood; one brother, Robert Lee Smith of Cold Water, Michigan; four sisters, Erma Tubbs of Cold Water, Michigan, Mamie Mortimer of Des Moines, Iowa, Rosemary Brewer of Bronson, Michigan, and Evelyn Hampton of Kewanee, Illinois; and one grandson, Andrew Lee Smith of Edgewood. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Russell Smith and one son-in-law, Ralph McCormick.
