Nadia Madeline Moss

November 23, 2010 — February 2, 2015

At one of many doctor appointments with Dr. Hoon, Nadia's doctor at Kennedy Krieger, on an evening when all the nurses and staff had left for the day, when halls were silent, when the dark of the room, punctuated by the white light of the scans showed what little remained of Nadia's brain, after spinning around in his chair, ending knee to knee with Andrea and lowering his glasses, paused and declared, "It's a miracle!", he stated what Nadia's family already knew: She's a miracle!

In her short four year life, she shared her personality in ways many never knew, but those fortunate enough to know her witnessed or experienced. All the Nadia's names illustrate the degree to which she was endeared by those closest to her: little bird, little monster, baby-baby, nadushka, nads, silly, and pretty girl.

Even though Nadia was unable to speak, she communicated clearly her delight with smiles, laughter, and happy sounds and later even learned to flirt by fluttering her long dark eyelashes. So she smiled at loud church music, crying babies, and her favorite music from Pirates of the Caribbean. She gladly polished off bottles of blended peanut butter and homemade strawberry jelly sandwiches with milk or her other favorite, sweet potatoes. And she loved the rhythms and rhymes of Dr. Seuss books that her dad read to her and regular Friday afternoon swims with her grandmother.

But for all the things Nadia loved, there was one she did not and that was traveling in the car. Since she went everywhere with her family, this meant she became a frequent flier, flying to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Raleigh, and Southern Vermont airports for vacation. Closer to home, Nadia went everywhere with her mom and dad often involving wagons and wheelchairs: autumn trips to the pumpkin farm, visits with friends, swimming dates with her cousins, family reunions, and lots of walks. Even for her strength and tenacity, she was soft and loving with her favorite and most peaceful moments sleeping, wrapped in the arms of her mother.
