Missouri Hill Everett Bates was born to the late Joseph P. and Ida Naomi Hill, on February 6, 1926 in Como, North Carolina. She later moved with her family to reside in Edgewood, Maryland.
She was a member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church during her early years, and later attended Community Baptist Church in Joppa, Maryland and Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church of Long Green, Maryland.
Missouri loved spending time with, and attending to her family. Cooking big meals and baking pies and cakes was the thing she enjoyed most. As anyone who ever crossed the threshold of her home could most assuredly tell you, when they left, it was with a full stomach and a good word.
She slipped away peacefully, Saturday October 8, 2011 at 2:05 am.
Missouri leaves to cherish her memory nine beloved children: Etta L. Warren (James), Garysburg, North Carolina; William C. Everett, Jr. (Portia), Edgewood, Maryland; Christine Scott (Herbert), Manchester, Pennsylvania; Theresa L. Robinson (Bernard), Edgewood, Maryland; Janice E. Jackson (William), Bel Air, Maryland; Carolyn Everett, Morganton, North Carolina; Delphine Connelly (Gaither), Cornelius, NC; Elton Everett, Edgewood, Maryland; and Terry Everett, Sr. (Patience), Bowie, Maryland.
She also leaves to treasure her memory 38 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; four sisters-in-law, Cora Hill, Murfreesboro, NC, Doris Miggins, Franklin, Virginia; Beatrice Howard, New Jersey; Bernice Haymes, Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers-in-law Fletcher Everett, Newsoms, Virginia; Edward (Tossiey) Britt, Franklin, Virginia.
She is predeceased by (in order of death), Darnell Everett (son), William C. Everett, Sr. (1st husband), Frances Elaine Ridley (daughter), Carl Bates, Sr. (2nd husband), and John Cleaven Everett.
Special appreciation and heartfelt thanks go to her "adopted" daughters, Lucinda McDowell, Pamelia Demby, Mary Brown and Denise Brightful; and her caregiver, Nancy Kamau.
Repass to follow after burial at Mt. Gilead A.M.E. Church.
