Michael P. Kennedy, age 64, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on December 5, 2011 at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Born in Lewistown, PA, he was the son of the late Robert Pomeroy and Ruth Emma McNitt Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy's career has spanned over 38 years. He enlisted in the Army in January 1966 and served three years. After attending Penn State University, he transferred to Temple University where in 1973, as a ROTC graduate, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. Upon graduating, Mr. Kennedy was commissioned into the Regular Army as a Second Lieutenant. After receiving training at Forts Bragg, Benning, Dix, and Huachuca, Mr. Kennedy served as a Counterintelligence Officer and Special Agent in the 527th Military Intelligence Battalion, Germany, then the First Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, TX. Mr. Kennedy was honorably discharged from the Army in 1980.
The next chapter of his career began in 1981 when Mr. Kennedy became a Department of the Army Civilian at the Chemical Systems Laboratory in Edgewood, MD. In 1986, he departed Edgewood for a 4-year assignment at MacDill Air Force Base, FL, with the Defense Intelligence Agency. In 1990, Mr. Kennedy returned to Edgewood as the Edgewood Research, Development and Engineering Center's (ERDEC) Foreign Intelligence Officer. Subsequently, he became the Chief, ERDEC Counterintelligence Office, Chief, Military Intelligence Support Team, the US Army Soldier Biological and Chemical Command G2 and ultimately the RDECOM G2/Senior Intelligence Officer. In addition to being a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam era, Mr. Kennedy has received such awards as the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Commander's Award for Civilian Service.
He attended CrossRoads Community Church and was a member of the American Legion in Bel Air, MD, American Pool Players Association, and a local Pool League.
Mr. Kennedy is survived by his wife of 40 years, Karen L. Kennedy of Bel Air, MD; son, Robert P. Kennedy of Towson, MD; daughter, Kathleen "Kate" Stolarczyk and husband, Jason, of San Francisco, CA; brothers, James R. Kennedy of Cincinnati, OH and John F. Kennedy of Ardmore, PA; and grandson, Owen T. Stolarczyk of San Francisco, CA.
