On November 21, 2002, Maurine W. Carter, lately of Catonsville, died at the Charlestown Care Center, Catonsville where she had lived the last eight years of her life. Her home was Aberdeen, Maryland. Born in Bowie, she was the daughter of the late Linwood and Mabel Binick Williams. She grew up in Prince Georges’ County, Maryland and Washington, D.C. She was 87.

Prior to her marriage to the late Raymond Carter in 1945, Maurine worked with the head of the Democratic National Committee on the 1940 campaign to re-elect Franklin Roosevelt. She had also worked for Time/Life Magazines in New York City and the Census Bureau in Maryland.

She and her husband with their children moved to Forest Greens, MD in 1954 where Mr. Carter helped establish a school at Aberdeen Proving Ground. They were joined here by Mrs. Carter’s daughter, Barbara and her son George. In 1950, Mrs. Carter opened Maurine’s Fabrics with stores in Aberdeen and Bel Air.

Mrs. Carter is survived by three children, Judith Anne Carter of Washington, D.C William Raymond Carter of Baltimore; Robert Edwin Carter of Henderson, Nevada; one brother, Roger Linwood Williams of Weems, Virginia; one sister, Oneida Thompson of Melbourne, Florida; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Barbara Szabo Cooke.
