Matthew Peter Jurgs, age 49, of Forest Hill, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2022, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Maryland, after a brief illness. Born in Mineola, New York, to the late Peter Gegen Jurgs and Sally Baumert Jurgs, he was a devoted father to his children, Grace and Liam, and a faithful member of St. Ignatius Parish in Forest Hill. Matt was immensely proud of everything Grace and Liam did. Whether at one of Grace’s concerts or watching Liam at a skatepark, Matt’s face would light up with the biggest smile when he was with his children or spoke of his children. Family trips to the beach or mountains were both an adventure and experience to be treasured. He was dedicated to their health, happiness and success. He could never get enough time with them. Grace and Liam were truly his lifeline. Matthew was an excellent and much beloved Special Education teacher for Baltimore County Public Schools. He spent most of his tenure at Pikesville Middle School and Owings Mills High School. He was an invaluable team member in every endeavor and considered his job a personal mission to be of service to others. His care, compassion, empathy, good humor, patience, commitment and warm outgoing personality were his calling card to everyone. He will be profoundly missed. Matthew loved nature, hiking, fishing, swimming, skiing, boating, and anything to do with the outdoors. He enjoyed a variety of different types of music in his man cave with 15 speakers and had a soft spot for his dogs, Willow and Clover.
Matthew is survived by his loving companion, Lisa Porter; daughter, Grace Elaine Jurgs; son, Liam Peter Jurgs; brother, Derek Jurgs; sister-in-law, Alicia Jurgs; dear friends, Kathleen Pelletier and Mia Talarigo; and many loving friends and co-workers.

Matt held a special place in his heart for Children’s National Hospital. It was their lifesaving efforts that gave him the gift of his daughter, Grace. He shared her story with many friends and family over the years with love in his heart. Matt made a commitment to always give back to Children’s when possible, in the hopes that other families might receive the same love, care, and miracles that Grace was gifted.
