Mary grew up on a farm in Fleetwood North Carolina. She was one of 13 children. She learned to be tough, independent, and resourceful. She is survived by just one sibling, her youngest sister, whom she adored, Dot Greene. Mary Nell moved to Maryland from Fleetwood North Carolina when she was in her teens. She met her husband Monroe Simons, Jr. in Maryland. They both worked for Bata Shoe Factory for many years. After her husband's death in 1983, Mary worked in the nutrition department of Perry Point Veterans Hospital for many years. Monroe and Mary Nell had a son, Michael, who was her pride and joy. Mike was devoted to his mom and visited her daily and always made sure to be there whenever she needed anything. Mary was an avid gardener. She loved the outdoors. She grew a huge vegetable garden every year and loved sharing the harvest with her friends and family. In her younger years, she liked to take road trips throughout the US. She loved to stop to see relatives along the way. She cherished her granddaughter, Cassandra. She was so proud of Cassie's achievements and would share them with her friends and family. Mary loved to walk and exercise. She walked her grand dog, Burt, daily and stopped by to check on neighbors and relatives along her way. She was generous to those in need, or not feeling well and would deliver home baked goods, casseroles, and candy to cheer them up. She will be missed by us all. She was one of a kind.
Mary is survived by her son, Michael W. Simons (Paula); grandchildren, Cassandra L. Gerson (Joel) and Shane A. Farmer; sister, Dorothy Green; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Monroe Simons Jr. and 11 siblings.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
