Mary Marcia Richter

March 16, 1918 — November 13, 2005

MARY MARCIA RICHTER, Age 87, of Perryville, died on November 13, 2005, at Mariner Health of Bel Air.

Born in Dallastown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Monterville Huson and Margaret Frances Burkins Huson. She was the wife of the late Warner Marion Richter, Jr.

She graduated from Dallastown High School in 1935, where she was a member of the track team. She was a member of the Old Line State Motorcycle Club where she competed in time trials and agility events. She hunted rabbits and squirrels with her son, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother from 1946 until 1950. She was a member of the Bel Air chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the American Legion Auxiliary, where she helped sponsor and chaperone a teen club for several years. Mrs. Richter volunteered and was chairman of the Bel Air March of Dimes, and served as secretary of the Harford County chapter of the March of Dimes until 1975. She served in the Harford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for 55 years and was awarded life membership in 1986. During that time, she volunteered over 9, 000 hours of her time, and served as Bel Air Unit President in 1956, Auxiliary President in 1958-59, 1974-75, and 1976. She was elected to the Board of Directors of Harford Memorial Hospital in January, 1976, becoming the first woman to achieve that distinction. In the mid eighties, she served one term as the president of the Maryland Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. Most recently she volunteered with the Lights of Life and the gift shop at Harford Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Richter joined the staff of the old Harford Gazette in 1949, later becoming circulation manager before being named business manager. She then became secretary until 1955 to John D. Worthington, Jr., editor of the Aegis. While there, she trained on and later ran the Scanograver machine that transferred photographs into a format suitable for printing in the newspaper. She was also secretary and bookkeeper for Richter Plumbing in Havre de Grace.

Her family said that she was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed sunsets on the water near her home.

Mrs. Richter is survived by one brother, Edwin Sterling Huson of Kingsville; one sister, Shirley Alice Matthews of Bel Air; her daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Richter of Frederick; two grandchildren, Diana L Wilson of Frederick and Susan R. Twigg of Bel Air; and four great-grandchildren, Gilbert, Douglas and Madeline Wilson, all of Frederick, and James Twigg, Jr. of Bel Air.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ms. Richter was predeceased by her son, Warner Marion Richter, III.
