Mary Catherine McAvoy Roberts of Ellicott City, formerly of Bel Air, MD, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Gilchrist Hospice Center. She was 84 years old. Mrs. Roberts lived at Brighton Gardens of Towson for two and a half years. She is the daughter of the late William D. and Mary C. McAvoy, of Osceola Mills, PA.
Mrs. Roberts received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from Indiana University of PA and Pennsylvania State University, respectively. She and her family moved from Massachusetts to Bel Air in 1961 at which time she resumed her teaching career. Mrs. Roberts retired from Harford County Public Schools in 1985; she taught third grade at Wakefield Elementary for 24 years.
She was an active parishioner at St. Margaret Church for 40 years and was a member of Legion of Mary and hosted faith-sharing groups. Mrs. Roberts served on the Parish Council and was one of the early Eucharistic Ministers. She enjoyed making Communion calls to the sick and elderly.
Mrs. Roberts is predeceased by her husband, John W. Roberts and sister, Jane R. Hrehov. She is survived by two daughters, Harriet Mary of Ellicott City, and Ann Ella of Towson, and a nephew, Daniel W. Hrehov and his family of Maple Valley, WA.
