MARGUERITE HARRIET BISHOP HEAD “MISS MARGUERITE”, was born on November 18, 1925 in Perryville. She was the youngest child of George Bishop, Sr. and Janie Dutton Bishop. She attended schools in Maryland and Chester, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Head died at her residence on April 1, 2005. She was 79.
After school, she met and married Ollie M. Head of Atlanta, Georgia. In that marriage there were five sons and a daughter, Maurice L. Bishop, Sr. of Fallston, William L. Head, Sr. of Edgewood, Roger A. Head of Essex, Thomas A. Head of Edgewood, Robert T. Head of Edgewood, and Cheryl A. Walker of Edgewood. There are 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a bother, John Bishop of Aberdeen.
As a child, Mrs. Head attended St. James A.M.E. Church in Chester, PA and St. Matthews A.U.M.P. Church in Havre de Grace. Later in life, she joined Tabernacle U.M. Church for 47 years until her death. At Tabernacle Church, she was church treasurer and sang in the choir.
Mrs. Head would cook food and serve it by herself to raise money for different programs they had at the church. She never took out any expenses. All the money was given to the church. Her last big program at Tabernacle Church was having a family reunion to help for their Women’s Day Program. Every month, Sister Head gave every child in the church $1.00. It was not a lot of money but she gave it to them out of the goodness of her heart and God’s love. She was also an usher in the church.
Mrs. Head was also the first black den mother of Boy Scout Troop 369 in Edgewood and the first black waitress they hired at the Officers Club at Edgewood Arsenal.
Sister Head was loved by the Pastors she served under and the members really loved her, young and old. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, George Bishop, Jr.; and five sisters, Annie Preston, Martha Bishop, Lillian Bishop, Georgianna James and Marion Franklin.
